There are various different kinds of care home, catering for different needs. The three main types are:

  • Registered care homes
  • Registered Nursing Homes
  • Specialist care homes and units catering for people with special needs, such as those with dementia.

Different Kinds of Home
Care homes are very diverse. Some, often the larger ones, are run by big companies, whilst others are small, independent organisations and individuals.

Registration and Regulation
Residential care homes and nursing homes are inspected and regulated by the National Care Standards Commission. Local Authorities and Primary Care Trusts also have contact with the homes through the reviews they carry out with residents whose care they fund. They work closely with the inspectorate (“CSCI”)
